Sharp Praises Resilience Of Seconds In Scrapping For Share Of Spoils

Coach Kevin Sharp praised the resilience shown by the Worcestershire Seconds batsmen in securing a draw from the Championship match with Derbyshire Seconds at Stourbridge.

Worcestershire trailed by 167 on the first innings but batted right through the final day in reaching 326-6 to gain the five points for a share of the spoils to add to five bonus points.

Alexei Kervezee scored a century and eventually totalled 140 but several players dug in and showed fight and application to hold off the Derbyshire attack.

Sharp said: "We did well. At the start of the match, the pitch did quite a lot. It seamed a bit and swung a bit and it was quite difficult to bat on the first day.

"We could have been bowled out a lot earlier than we were actually but the lads scrapped quite hard (to get to 223).

"We were 150 plus behind on first innings but the lads fought really hard on the final day. There were some good performances.

"A lot of the lads got their head down and most of them contributed something towards us getting the draw.

"There were only two results possible at the start of the last day, a draw or a defeat, and they showed some resilience really.

"It was a well earned draw in the end. We had to occupy the crease and not lose wickets and did that."

The Seconds are next in action on Monday in a T20 double header against Northamptonshire at Northampton.

That is followed by a three day Championship match against Northants at Northfields CC from Tuesday to Thursday.
