Skipper Ollie Scores Century As Seconds Claim Maximum Batting Points

Skipper Ollie Westbury scored his third Championship century for Worcestershire Seconds and led them to maximum batting points on day two of the match with MCC Young Cricketers at High Wycombe.

The England Under-19 player was the rock on which the Worcestershire innings was built and, with good support from Zen Malik, Ross Whiteley and Josh Dell, helped his side to total 406 all out.

It earned coach Alex Gidman’s side a healthy first innings lead of 137 after they had resumed on 84-2.

MCC YC faced only one ball from Worcestershire paceman Dillon Pennington before play ended for the day and they will resume on 4-0 tomorrow morning.

Westbury batted for six and a quarter hours in making 127 off 288 balls with 13 boundaries.

His previous Championship hundreds were 111 away to Nottinghamshire at the Sports Ground in Nottingham in 2015 and 137 against Northamptonshire at Kidderminster in 2016.

In addition Westbury has also scored two hundreds for the Seconds in friendly matches against Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College – 151 in 2016 and 118 last summer.

Play began an hour late after water had got under the covers before Westbury dropped anchor after resuming on 23 not out.

He shared in stands of 69 with Malik (45 off 51 balls, seven fours) and 80 with Whiteley (47 off 67 balls, eight fours) before featuring in the largest stand of the day with Josh Dell.

The fifth wicket pair put on 154 in 46 overs to take the total to 344 before Westbury was out in the first over after tea.

Dell went onto make 80 from 151 balls with 11 boundaries and was seventh out at 374.

Some useful late runs from wicket-keeper Joe Dodd and triallist Grant Thornton steered the final total past the 400 mark.
