Worcestershire continued their Clydesdale Bank 40 campaign with a match against top of the table Sussex at Horsham. There were a few changes to the team that had won in the Championship the previous day. With Saeed Ajmal's spell as overseas player over and Alexei Kervezee rested it was a young looking Worcestershire side with the inclusion of Neil Pinner and Nick Harrison.

Sussex won the toss and elected to bat first. The home side set a fast pace in the first few overs on a superb batting track. The openers Ed Joyce and Joe Gatting dominated the Worcestershire attack with some aggressive batting and found the boundary with ease. Both batsmen passed their half century mark by the 15th over of the innings.

Once past his first fifty Joyce accelerated scoring his second in just 23 balls to register his second one day century against Worcestershire this season. The opening partnership had reached 210 before Joyce was caught by Aneesh Kapil off the bowling of Jack Shantry for 120, off just 74 deliveries including 15 boundaries. Gatting also passed the century mark, with his second 50 coming at an almost sedate pace of 44 deliveries. Gatting made 122 off 94 deliveries including 18 boundaries before being caught in the deep by James Cameron off the bowling of Gareth Andrew.

Lou Vincent also got into the run fest with an innings of 71 off 43 deliveries including some huge shots into the tennis courts at the Church end of the ground as Sussex reached a massive score of 399-4 in their 40 over allocation, which is the highest ever limited over score made against Worcestershire and the highest score by any county in a 40 over competition. The opening partnership of 210 was the third highest ever limited over partnership against Worcestershire and the highest in 40 over competitions.

It was not a day to be a bowler but Daryl Mitchell deserves credit for his 0-59 in 8 overs, the most economical of the Worcestershire bowlers.

The Worcestershire reply got off the worst possible start with Vikram Solanki bowled on the second ball of the innings by Naved Arif. The visitors fought back well with a awesome batting display by Moeen Ali who recovered from being dropped on two to score a career best 158 as the visitors not only kept up with the required run rate, actually were ahead of it for a stage in the middle part of the innings.

Moeen's innings came in just 92 deliveries and included 20 fours and 7 sixes before being stumped by Ben Brown off the bowling of Michael Yardy. Daryl Mitchell made the next highest score with 35 off just 21 deliveries. Once Moeen was dismissed with the score on 264-5 the rest of the innings fell away with Worcestershire dismissed for 319.

Sussex (399-4) beat Worcestershire (319) by 80 runs.
