Whiteley Hits Century As Seconds Go Down Fighting In Trophy

Whiteley Hits Century As Seconds Go Down Fighting In Trophy

Ross Whiteley hit a rapid century as Worcestershire Seconds put up a brave fight before going down by 43 runs to Yorkshire in a Second Eleven Trophy clash at Stamford Bridge.

The former Derbyshire all-rounder smashed 101 off just 86 balls with three sixes and 12 fours.

But Worcestershire were unable to overhaul a demanding target of 333 in 50 overs and were dismissed with 11 balls remaining.

The home side, who elected to bat, were indebted a fine 124 from Will Rhodes after he had lost his opening partner Andrew Hodd to a duck in Graeme Whiles' opening over.

He faced 130 balls and struck three sixes and 12 fours before falling to Nick Harrison after adding 112 for the fifth wicket with Ryan Gibson.

Gibson made a swift 66 from 48 balls and 103 came from the final 10 overs.

Worcestershire started well in reply with openers Matt Pardoe and Joe Clarke putting on 56.

The innings gained real impetus during a third wicket stand of 122 in 16 overs between Whiteley and Brett D'Oliveira whose 62 came off 51 deliveries with two sixes and five other boundaries.

After they had been parted, skipper Gareth Andrew and Ed Barnard kept up the momentum but the run rate was always just ahead of them.

Yorkshire had scored 278-4 after 46 overs with Worcestershire standing on 277-6 at the same stage but the last four wickets then went down for 12 runs in 2.1 overs.
