Ross Whiteley has relived the occasion which enabled him to create history by becoming the first Englishman to hit six sixes in an over.
The Worcestershire all-rounder has spoken in detail for the first time about the brutal assault on Yorkshire spinner Karl Carver in a NatWest T20 Blast match at Headingley this summer.
Whiteley became only the fifth player of all time to achieve the feat and received a ‘welcome to the club’ message from another of them in former South African star Herschelle Gibbs.
The 29-year-old Whiteley said: “To be honest, it was a bit of a blur. I’ve tried to relive it a few times and watched videos of it happening because I don’t really remember each shot individually at all.
“I hit the first two for six and then Peter Handscomb, the Yorkshire keeper, mentioned to me something about the six sixes.
“I kind of laughed it off as a bit of a joke.
“But the third one came, the fourth one came and there was a bit of a break in play so it didn’t feel like it all happened straight away.
“When it happened, Brett (D’Oliveira) came to me from the other end with a fist pump and an awkward hug.
“It still didn’t really register as such until after the game.”
Whiteley added: “I’ve seen Gary Sobers’ six sixes a few times over the years and obviously seen a couple of the others.
“I saw the Stuart Broad one by Yuvraj Singh, the Herschelle Gibbs one.
“He actually sent me a message saying ‘welcome to the club’ which is quite nice. That was a nice little touch.
“To be the fifth person and first Englishman is pretty special.”
Whiteley had a word of sympathy after the game with Carver.
He said: “We had a chat after the game. He is pretty young and those sort of things don’t happen very often but bowlers come back from being whacked for 30 odd in an over.
“It’s happened to Broad. He is one of the best seamers in the world and has hundreds of Test wickets.
He (Carver) is a good bowler, is pretty young and I’m sure he will come back from it.”
