Moeen Ali made another crucial contribution – this time with the bat – in his excellent summer as England set the West Indies a 322 target in the second Test at Headingley.
The Worcestershire all-rounder hit 84 off just 93 balls with 14 fours as England declared on 490-8.
Moeen came to the wicket at 312-6 with England leading by just 143 and figured in an eighth wicket stand of 117 in 23 overs with Chris Woakes (61 not out).
The 30-year-old had one slice of luck on 32 when caught behind off what was a close call no ball from Devendra Bishoo who eventually had Moeen caught at long on.
Joe Root, Dawid Malan, Ben Stokes and Mark Stoneman also made half centuries and the West Indies reached 5-0 at the close.
Moeen said: “We definitely felt like their heads went down after tea pretty quickly.
“We just wanted to keep going and keep burying them and make them suffer in terms of keeping them out in the field because their bowlers were getting tired and they were getting down as a side.
“We wanted to capitalise on that. We pounced on them.”
On the no-ball incident, Moeen said: “These things happen. People make mistakes. I’ve heard it was very, very tight. But some people say it was a no-ball.”
