Worcestershire launched their YB40 campaign with a victory by 91 runs against Sussex Sharks at Hove.
Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bat first but the visitors lost their first wicket in the opening over of the innings when Moeen Ali (3), trying to reverse sweep, was bowled around his legs by Michael Yardy.
Then Daryl Mitchell and Alexei Kervezee put on 45 for the second wicket until Kervezee, charging down the wicket, was stumped by Ben Brown off Michael Rippon for 27.
Tilan Samaraweera had two reprieves as along with Mitchell, who reached his 50 off 55 balls, they scored 111 for the third wicket until Samaraweera was caught by Chris Nash at fine leg off Chris Liddle for 41, with the score on 160-3 in the 27th over.
18 runs later Neil Pinner (9) was well caught by Chris Jordan at mid-off from the bowling of James Anyon and then Gareth Andrew blasted a huge six over deep mid-wicket before he was the fifth wicket to fall, with the score on 220, by attempting another big shot and instead skied it to Rory Hamilton-Brown at point off Liddle for 21.
But Mitchell continued to lead from the front and eventually he reached his maiden List A hundred off 100 balls, with 8 fours, as Worcestershire looked to be heading for over 250 but 4 wickets fell in the last 2 overs as Cox scored 11, Mitchell was eventually run out for a brilliant 107 off 106 balls, with 9 fours, and then both Michael Johnson and Brett D'Oliveira were out for ducks as Worcestershire ended on 245-9 off their 40 overs.
In reply the Sharks got off to a disastrous start as Luke Wells (5) was caught at mid-off by Andrew off Jack Shantry, who then caught Nash (8) off David Lucas to leave the home side on 16-2.
Then on 45 Hamilton-Brown was run out by Pinner for 12 and when Matt Prior, who had earlier been dropped twice, was stumped by Johnson off Ali for 17 Sussex were stuttering at 52-4 in the 11th over.
Ed Joyce and Michael Yardy then put on 38 for the fifth wicket until Joyce was trapped lbw off D’Oliveira for 27 and then after Brown (7) was caught by Kervezee at deep mid-wicket off D'Oliveira and Yardy (45) was run out, backing up, by Mitchell the contest was effectively over, with the Sharks on 139-7 in the 28th over.
Then the innings was quickly wrapped up as Jordan (12) was stumped by Johnson off Mitchell and when Shantry took the final two wickets to dismiss both Anyon and Liddle the home side were all out for 154 off 31.5 overs to wrap up a fine victory for Worcestershire.
Shantry was the leading wicket-taker for Worcestershire, with figures of 3-29 off 4.5 overs, with D'Oliveira (2-37 off 8 overs), Lucas (1-13 off 3 overs), Mitchell (1-16 off 3 overs) and Ali (1-33 off 7 overs) all chipping in for the visitors.
