Worcestershire County Cricket Club is pleased to announce details of the speakers to join John Elliott for our President's Pre-Ashes Lunch at New Road on Monday 1st July. A lunch event which will see two of The Ashes' leading characters talk about their experiences and highlights from one of the sporting world's most contested honours.
Australian Jeff Thomson was probably the quickest bowler to have been involved in The Ashes, with his fastest delivery being measured at 99.4mph. He burst onto the scene during his first Ashes series in 1974/5, where he picked up 33 wickets across the six Tests in Australia. This series provided Thomson with an appetite for English scalps, as he went on to take a total of 100 English wickets in 21 matches. Compare this to his total Test career (200 wickets from 51 matches), and you can see how much the Ashes meant to him.
He will be joined by ex-England captain Mike Gatting, who has the misfortune of being forever known as the victim of Shane Warne's "Ball of the Century". But Gatting's Ashes career has certainly had other moments that he will look back upon more fondly. He scored his first century of four against Australia in 1985, and the following year led an England team, perceived to be well below par, to an historic series win in Australia. His Ashes career extended to 1995, a series in which he claimed his last Ashes and career century for England, which highlights his commitment and talent from beginning to end.
Join John Elliott, Jeff Thomson and Mike Gatting for an afternoon of hospitality which will include a glass of Champagne on arrival, prior to a superb three course luncheon, followed by a full afternoon of entertainment including speeches, Q&A session and a preview of the most famous clash in Cricket. Be there as Thomson and Gatting share their personal experiences and behind the scenes insight into the most historic of all sporting clashes.
