Worcestershire suffered a disappointing 8 wicket defeat against the Warwickshire Bears in the Friends Life t20 at Edgbaston.
Worcestershire had a good start to the innings as Moeen Ali hit two sixes off Ateeq Javid in the first over of the match, which went for 19, and after the six powerplay overs the score had moved on to 56-0.
But 4 runs later Ali top-edged a pull off Jeetan Patel and was caught by Will Porterfield for 37 off 23 balls, with 3 fours and 2 sixes, and then 2 overs later Tilan Samaraweera was bowled by Steffan Piolet for 33 off 26 balls, with 4 fours, with the score on 74-2.
Wickets then fell at regular intervals during the rest of the Worcestershire innings as Daryl Mitchell (9), Andre Russell (5) and Gareth Andrew (9) all departed by the 17th over, with the vistors on 123-5, and then in the next over Chris Woakes had Alexei Kervezee caught behind by Peter McKay for 27 and, 5 balls later, trapped Ben Cox (1) lbw to leave Worcestershire on 131-7.
Joe Leach and Brett D’Oliveira (8*) then added 15 runs in the last two overs before Leach was bowled by Woakes for 13 in the final ball of the innings as Worcestershire finished on 146-8 off their 20 overs.
Warwickshire lost Porterfield early on when he was bowled by Russell for 1 but Varun Chopra and Darren Maddy, who were both dropped by Mitchell, tormented Worcestershire once again this season in the Friends Life t20 by putting on 107 for the second wicket.
Maddy scored 44 off 35 balls, with 2 fours and 2 sixes, before he was caught behind by Cox off Russell (2-26 off 3 overs) but the Warwickshire Bears cruised to victory, with 15 balls to spare, as Chopra finished unbeaten on 75 off 57 balls, with 6 fours and 3 sixes, and Rikki Clarke struck 2 sixes to end on 18 not out off just 8 balls.
