Barnard Hits First Century For Queanbeyan In Battle With County Colleague Leach

Worcestershire all-rounder Ed Barnard scored his first century for Queanbeyan District on the first day of a Australian Capital Territory first grade match against visiting North Canberra Gungahlin featuring county colleague Joe Leach.

Leach had come out on top when the Northies overcame Queanbeyan to win the ACT Konica Cup T20 competition last weekend.

But Barnard has put his side in a strong position to press for victory when the two day fixture is concluded tomorrow (Sunday).

The England Under-19 player, whose aim along with Joe Clarke is to push for a first team place at New Road next season, came to the wicket with his side 79-3 and when he was finally dismissed the score stood on 328-6.

Barnard shared in a fourth wicket stand of 144 with L. Shivakkumar (90) before Leach broke the stand with the total on 223.

He was eventually dismissed for a splendid 105 made off 148 balls in just three hours after hitting one six and nine fours.

Barnard is the fourth Worcestershire player to score a century this winter after Richard Oliver, Ross Whiteley and Academy Player Of The Year Alex Milton.

By the close of play Queanbeyan District had amassed a formidable 414-8 from 95.1 overs.

Leach, who is second in the ACT bowling averages, took the new ball and fnished with respectable figures of 2-74 from 20 overs.

It lifted his wicket tally to 20 for the campaign.
