Clarke Included In Lions Side For Winter Opener In Dubai

Joe Clarke has been included in the England Lions side for the opening one-dayer against the United Arab Emirates at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium tomorrow.

The Worcestershire batsman will return to the middle for the first time since scoring a career best 194 in the Specsavers County Championship clash with Derbyshire at New Road in late September.

The 20-year-old, who is set to bat at number four, has been part of a training camp in Dubai for the past three weeks and has spelt out his determination to score heavily this winter for the Lions to bolster his chances of a full England call-up.

Keaton Jennings will lead the Lions in the first two one-dayers and then link up with England as a replacement for Haseeb Hameed in the fourth Test with India in Mumbai next week.

Clarke, who scored 1200 Championship runs in 2016, wants to eventually follow suit and this represents his third Lions call-up in the past 12 months.

He was part of the squad for the T20 and 50 over matches against Pakistan 'A' in the UAE last winter and was also selected for the Tri-Series with Pakistan 'A' and Sri Lanka 'A' during the summer.

The Lions play three 50 over games against the UAE and then next week face Afghanistan in a four-dayer in Abu Dhabi.

Jennings is set to be one of two Lions debutants against a UAE team coached by the former England batsman Owais Shah with young Hampshire left-hander Tom Alsop due to bat at number three.

Surrey have four players in the side in Sam and Tom Curran, Stuart Meaker, and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes.
