Worcestershire Rapids went down by 153 runs in their Royal London One-Day Cup semi-final with Surrey at New Road.
The Rapids were bowled out for 210 in the 34th over in reply to Surrey’s 363-7 in 50 overs. Former Worcestershire spinner Gareth Batty finished with 5-40 from nine overs.
Brett D’Oliveira and Ross Whiteley hit half centuries for the Rapids after Moeen Ali’s quickfire 36 had launched the innings but they lost wickets at regular intervals.
Surrey were forced into a late change in their side when Scott Borthwick was forced to pull out with an ankle injury suffered in the warm-up and was replaced by Rory Burns.
The visitors elected to bat on winning the toss in front of a near capacity crowd on a glorious sun-drenched day.
Surrey openers Jason Roy and Mark Stoneman gave their side a positive start and put on 114 in 14 overs before Moeen Ali made the first breakthrough.
Stoneman on 41 aimed a hit over mid wicket and was bowled by the England spinner.
Skipper Joe Leach rotated his bowlers and it was Daryl Mitchell who claimed the wicket of Roy on 92.
He was trapped lbw at 179-2 in the 26th over after striking one six and 12 fours off 81 deliveries after adding 65 with Kumar Sangakkara.
The next over also brought success for the Rapids as Burns (5) was bowled by a fine delivery from Brett D’Oliveira.
Sangakkara advanced to 73 – from 72 deliveries with six fours and two sixes – when he fell victim to a superb legside catch by Ben Cox off John Hastings at 259-4.
Ben Foakes brought up his half century off 51 balls and then Leach returned to the attack and held a return skied catch from Ollie Pope (22).
Two wickets fell in the final over from Leach. Foakes (86) was run out by Ross Whiteley’s direct hit from deep mid wicket attempting a second run and then Sam Curran hit wicket after making 21.
When the Rapids launched their reply, Mitchell (0) was caught behind off Sam Curran and Tom Fell (2)was run out.
Moeen smashed Jade Dernbach for two sixes and four fours but the bowler had his revenge when he was caught at mid off.
D’Oliveira looked in good nick and collected successive fours off Tom Curran and then lofted Batty over long off for six.
Batty claimed his first wicket when Joe Clarke (15) nicked through to Foakes and then Hastings (3) was caught at deep mid wicket.
D’Oliveira reached an excellent half century but on 53 was lbw to Batty who then had Ben Cox (13) caught at long off.
Leach (7) fell at long on off Batty but then Whiteley provided some late afternoon entertainment with a 33-ball half century.
It contained four sixes and four fours before he was last out – caught at deep mid wicket – off Dernbach.
