Ajmal Ends Current Spell And Earns Praise From Worcs Skipper

Saeed Ajmal will make the final appearance of his current spell with Worcestershire in the LV = County Championship clash with Sussex at New Road beginning on Tuesday.

The Pakistan spinner, who played a major role in Worcestershire reaching the quarter-finals of the NatWest T20 Blast, has been at New Road since the beginning of the June.

Ajmal will return home as planned, with his contract running until the 4th September in order to allow him to attend a religious festival after the conclusion of the Sussex game next Friday.

Worcestershire have brought in West Indies paceman Shannon Gabriel as their overseas player for the final two games of the campaign against Durham and Middlesex.

Worcestershire skipper Daryl Mitchell paid tribute to the efforts of Ajmal who is coming to the end of a third spell with the County.

He said: “Saeed has been fantastic over the last couple of years.

"He probably hasn’t got as many wickets for us as he would have liked in red ball cricket this season but has proven again what a fantastic white ball bowler he is in the 50-over competition as well as being outstanding in the T20 format.

"He was a very important cog in our wheel in qualifying for T20 quarter-finals."

Ajmal was amongst the top five wicket-takers in the competition with 21 and played a big role in Worcestershire securing their first ever home quarter-final.

He has also earned constant praise for his willingness to give advice to England spinner Moeen Ali and the young members of the Worcestershire squad.
