Worcestershire Bowling Coach-Assistant Coach Alan Richardson gave his reaction at the end of day one of the Specsavers County Championship match with Durham at the Emirates Riverside.
The County reduced Durham to 47-6 after an uncontested toss before Ned Eckersley and Ben Raine added an unbroken 75 for the seventh wicket in a rain affected day of only 40 overs.
Richardson told BBC Hereford-Worcester’s Dave Bradley: “It is always quite tough when you are on and off for short periods.
“We couldn’t quite string it together after the first session, a bit of rhythm.
“All four of the previous games at Durham this season have had uncontested tosses. There was a nice bit of grass on the wicket and we took advantage of those conditions really well this morning.
“From what the boys have said, there is still a bit in the wicket. The ball has got wet so it has not helped with sideways movement.
“Ned Eckersley and Ben Raine played very well, very positively in terms of their foot work. Ned negated the good balls really well and was able to capitalise on anything that did not quite hit the mark.
“Kevin Sharp says the tail has never been stronger and the majority of sides in county cricket pride themselves on batting deep and long.
“Guys batting at eight, nine and ten have got good techniques and sometimes at number eleven.
“You can’t be a one-dimensional cricketer now and guys who bowl take pride in how they bat as well.”
