Alan Richardson: Day Two Reaction Worcestershire Versus Yorkshire

worcestershire head bowling coach alan richardson gave his reaction at the end of day two of the specsavers county championship match with yorkshire at New Road.

the home side kept yorkshire in check and picked up wickets at regular intervals until gary ballance (189 not out) and jack brooks (86) added 171 for the ninth wicket after tea.

yorkshire closed on 417-7 – a lead of 77 heading into tomorrow.

richardson said: “it was quite a strange day. for the majority of it, we acquitted ourselves really well and chipped away and took wickets and got us ahead of the game.

“that last session, 203 runs and only two wickets, has slightly taken it away from us. it is a bit disappointing after all the hard work we put in for the first five sessions.

“i think that’s the first time i can remember this year where we’ve had one of those lower order wicket partnerships against us and it is something that has historically happened quite a bit.

“it’s been pleasing it hasn’t happened very often. it is just a shame it has happened in this game and i think gary ballance has batted beautifully and looked like he was playing on a different wicket to everyone else.

“he was ably supported by jack brooks who probably played a slightly different sort of innings to gary!

“still plenty to play for? i think so and we have to make sure one session that hasn’t quite gone our way doesn’t affect us going forward into the rest of the game.

“we are still in a good enough position to get ourselves ahead of the game and give us a target to defend.”

worcestershire paceman josh tongue was unable to bowl in the final session because of a foot injury.
