Andrew Wants To “keep On Improving” After Receiving Fitness Tonic

Gareth Andrew hopes the best is still to come after the Worcestershire all-rounder was given the all-clear with his long term back problem.

The 30-year-old wants to "keep on improving" after scans revealed the fracture in a lumbar pedicle has completely healed.

He is keen to replicate the form he showed during 2011 when he finished runner-up to Marcus Trescothick as the Most Valuable Player in the PCA rankings that summer.

But the initial aim is for Andrew to be fit to bowl in the opening game of the pre-season trip to Abu Dhabi in early March if all goes to plan.

Andrew took 20 wickets in the opening four LV = County Championship matches of last season but was confined to playing as a batsman for the remainder of the campaign.

He said: "The start of last season, even though I wasn't fully fit, showed that I still have a lot to give.

"I only managed to play the one T20 game last year and I had an impact in that as well (against Durham).

"Looking forward, I'm still only 30 and hope to play for a lot longer.

"I'm also a lot wiser now, and know myself a lot better, and I just want to keep on improving as well.

"It is always tough every year, whether it is Division One or not. I had a great year in 2011 and I hope to replicate that this year."

Andrew insists there are no psycological barriers to overcome when it comes to returning to bowling after the problem first came to light towards the tail-end of the 2013 season.

He said: "Not at all really. I know now I'm in a better position than I was this time last year and also early season.

"If I could pull of what I did early last season with how things were, then I know going into this season I'll have a hell of a lot more confidence than I did last year."
