Booklet Expanded To “do Justice” To Exploits Of Supporters’ Association

Booklet Expanded To “do Justice” To Exploits Of Supporters’ Association

Andrew Thomas says he expanded the size of of his booklet about the history of the Worcestershire Supporters' Association was "to do justice to the fund-raising exploits of so many willing volunteers."

Thomas was responsible for the superb 440 page book 'Pears 150' which was released to mark 150 years of Worcestershire CCC.

Now he has written a potted history of the Supporters' Association which is due to be published for the start of the 2017 season.

Thomas explains: "At the end of the 2016 season, Supporters' Association chairman, Andrew Jenkins, asked if I would write a brief history of the Association before the start of the 2017 season.

"The booklet was also to be a tribute to the work of former chairman, Ken Mills MBe, his wife Pat, and Bob Brookes.

"Once I had agreed, Andrew gave me two large boxes of ledgers and folders containing many of the minutes and AGMs of the Association since 1951.

"To a Pears fan, it was all fascinating stuff and plans were soon changed to write a larger booklet in an attempt to do justice to the fund-raising exploits of so many willing volunteers over the past 65 years.

"I wonder if many Worcestershire CCC members realise just how much the Supporters' Association has provided.

"It was far more than just the high profile projects such as the Old Diglis End Scoreboard, Ladies Pavilion, New Road End development and purchasing the ground for Worcestershire CCC.

"The A to Z at the back of the booklet shows the wide range of donations made to Worcestershire CCC and cricket organisations around the County.

"Unfortunately, the long list cannot reflect the rapidly changing value of money. A £50 given to a local cricket club in the 1950s would be worth more than £1,000 today."

Thomas added: "Ken Mills' scrapbook, compiled during his 40 years running the Supporters' Association, has gone missing.

"When tracked down, that resource will add more detail to the Supporters' Association story in future editions of the booklet."

The front cover features the David Birtwhistle painting commissioned by the Supporters Association to mark 65 years of the Association and 150 years of Worcestershire CCC depicting the County's three different main pavilions.

The back cover lists several ways members may help the Association and volunteers with time or expertise are always welcome.

Association members will be entitled to a complimentary copy of the A5 size 56 page booklet although this must be collected from the Association Shop at the back of the Basil D'Oliveira Stand on match days.

But non members can also purchase a copy for £5.

Membership of the Association is also only £5 – £2 for juniors – and Thomas said: "We hope that will encourage more people to join and take an interest in the Association's future fund raising activities for Worcestershire CCC.

"While making much of its past, the Association is looking forward to supporting the Cricket Club in any way it can during what may be difficult and rapidly changing times ahead for UK cricket."

Meanwhile, anyone still wishing to obtain a copy of 'Pears 150' can also purchase one from the Association shop on match days this season, priced £28.
