Worcestershire CCC legend Don Kenyon wil be honoured on Monday (August 7) with the official unveiling of Level Two of The View which will be renamed after the County’s record run-scorer.
Don’s widow Jean – who celebrated her 90th birthday this year – and daughter Sue (Jackson) will be guests of honour and oversee the ceremony.
It will take place during the tea interval on the second day of the Specsavers County Championship match with Sussex at New Road.
Don remains the County’s record run-scorer in first class cricket with 37,002 runs and skippered them to their first two County Championship title triumphs in 1964 and 1965.
His achievements had previously been recognised via the Kenyon Room which is now housing Foley’s coffee house and eatery.
But Chief Executive Tom Scott had pledged that Kenyon’s name would be honoured in another appropriate venue at the County’s headquarters and has kept that promise.
Tom Scott said: ” We developed the 1865 Lounge which is now known as Foley’s – part of that project was to took away the Don Kenyon Room – I immediately realised we had to continue to recognise Don and what he did for the club.
“There is no better place at New Road than the new Level Two of The View. It is a fitting place to pay tribute to Don’s achievements at the club.
“We must continue to respect the history of the cricket club which is something I personally feel strongly about – but we also need to move forward.
“The combination of the The View and Don Kenyon reflects the past, present and future of Worcestershire County Cricket Club and long may it continue.”
Tom Scott added: “Sadly I never saw Don play but as a lifelong fan fully appreciate the role he has played in Worcestershire’s history and it is great that his family are still seen on a regular basis at New Road and is testament to their loyalty.
“There have been certain iconic players and characters over the club’s 150 year history – people like Paul Foley, Graeme Hick, Basil D’Oliveira, Tom Graveney – and Don is one of them.
“It is also great his daughter Sue and widow Jean will be attending on Monday to oversee the unveiling.”
