Stephen Chalke, the author of the much heralded book 'Summer's Crown: The Story of Cricket's County Championship' will be the guest speaker at the Worcestershire Cricket Society's November meeting in the Graeme Hick Pavilion at New Road tomorrow evening (Tuesday).
Stephen's 2015 book gives an compelling insight into the history, the grounds, the players, the stats and ups and downs of the competition's first 125 years.
But Salisbury born Stephen, who was born in 1948, has written and published several other highly acclaimed biographical and historical cricket books.
His collaboration with Geoffrey Howard, 'At the Heart of English Cricket' won the 2002 Cricket Society Book of the Year Award.
Stephen has won the Wisden Book of the Year award – in 2004 with 'No Coward Soul' – a biography of Bob Appleyard co-written with Derek Hodgson – and in 2008 with Tom Cartwright – 'The Flame Still Burns.'
In 2009 he won the National Sporting Club's Cricket Book of the Year with 'The Way It Was – Glimpses of English Cricket's Past' – a collection of more than 100 articles written for The Wisden Cricketer, Wisden Cricket Monthly and The Times.
It promises to be another evening to remember for Society members – starting at 7.30pm – and don't forget non-Society members can also attend for an admission charge of £3 per person.
