Clarke Junior Hits Century As Under-17S Win Thriller

xavie clarke scored a superb century as worcestershire under-17s warmed up for their royal london one-day cup campaign with a thrilling one wicket win over nottinghamshire under-17s at rgs worcester.

joe clarke had hit a fine hundred for the seniors against essex at New Road 24 hours earlier and his younger brother xavie showed his potential in the 50 over encounter as worcestershire chased a 280 target.

the academy player came in at number three and scored 123 from 121 balls with two sixes and 14 fours.

clarke received useful support from skipper jack haynes and charlie clist before featuring in 50 plus stands of 53 with dan meredith and 76 with ben fitzmaurice.

he was eventually seventh out in the 46th over at 253 with 27 still needed for victory.

in an exciting climax, ryan wheldon was run out from the third ball of the final over but sam flavell smashed the penultimate delivery to the boundary to seal victory for worcestershire.

earlier, another quality innings of 134 from nottinghamshire opener joey evison had been the feature of nottinghamshire’s innings of 279 all out after they had elected to bat.

nottinghamshire reached 231-3 with 10 overs remaining but were pegged back by the home attack and lost their last seven wickets for 48 runs.

charlie greening, who struck twice in one over, finished with 3-47, ryan wheldon 2-47 and matt davis 2-49.

worcestershire academy coach elliot wilson said: “it was a really good game of cricket featuring two special individual performances from xavie and joey.”
