Clarke Not Named In Lions Side For ‘test’ Opener In Sri Lanka

Joe Clarke was not included in the England Lions side for the opening four-day 'Test' against Sri Lanka 'A' at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy today.

The Worcestershire batsman had played in the warm-up match against a Sri Lanka Board President's X1 after having a late test on a wrist problem.

Clarke kept wicket and picked up six catches and a stumping in the match.

But the 20-year-old – the County's leading run-scorer in Specsavers County Championship cricket last summer – only managed two scores of 10 batting at number seven in the first innings and five in the second in the drawn encounter.

First choice keeper Ben Foakes has recovered from a back problem and took his place in the side today.

The Lions recovered from 61-3 after electing to bat thanks to a fourth wicket stand of 128 between Tom Westley (97) and Liam Livingstone (59).

Then four wickets went down for 16 runs and the Lions reached 205-7 at tea.

But Toby Roland-Jones hit 82 off 98 balls to steer the Lions to 316 all out from 80.2 overs and then took two wickets as Sri Lanka 'A' closed on 29-4.
