County Chief Is Focused On Derbyshire Clash As Worcs Return To Action

Worcestershire Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes says his focus is entirely on tomorrow's (Sunday's) opening session with Derbyshire in the LV = County Championship as his side return to action after a fortnight's break.

The county could be virtually promoted if they triumph at Derby – and other results go in their favour – before they entertain Surrey and visit Essex.

But Rhodes is looking no further ahead than the 11 o'clock start on Sunday and is full of respect for the Peakites – as he is for all of Worcestershire's opponents.

When asked if he would like to seal promotion before the final two games, Rhodes said: "Of course you would in many ways – but that's not my style.

"My style is to play each session as it comes, each day as it comes and not get too far ahead of yourself.

"So therefore the first and most important session for us in this season is the first session at Derby."

Derbyshire have shown improved form in recent weeks and Rhodes pinpointed paceman Mark Footitt and batsmen Wayne Madsen and Marcus North as key performers.

He said: "In professional sport, there are not many pushovers. Just ask Manchester United and what happened with them this week (losing to MK Dons).

"We don't take anyone for granted or anyone lightly and Derbyshire have got some quality cricketers.

"They've got a guy on nearly 50 wickets in Mark Footitt so he is going to be a handful.

"In Wayne Madsen, they've got one of the best batsmen in Division Two but also potentially one of the best batsman in both divisions.

"He is a real quality player and a good character, gets stuck in but he has also got shots and can score big runs.

"Their overseas player Cheteshwar Pujara may not be here yet but they've got an able substitute in Marcus North. He is a terrific cricketer.

"We are very respectful of the opposition.

"We certainly don't fear them but we also understand we've got to make sure, like we have all year really, that we get our house in order and play our game and if we do that, we've got a good chance."
