COUNTY KEEPER BEN COX’S BRAVE EFFORTS WITH THE BAT IN VAIN AS VOLTS GO UNDER

ben cox top-scored for otago volts but his brave effort was not enough to stop them from losing by 30 runs to canterbury and being eliminated from the super smash.

the worcestershire wicket-keeper-batsman made 49 off 40 balls with two sixes and three fours.

he came to the wicket with the volts in deep trouble at 20-4 in pursuit of a canterbury total of 172-4.

but cox, who was 27 yesterday, tried to retrieve a hopeless looking situation and figured in three useful partnerships.

he added 42 with anaru kitchen (22), 44 in tandem with brad wilson (25) and another 34 with michael rippon (20).

cox was eventually dismissed by will williams one short of what would have been an excellent half century with the total on 140.

his dismissal ended otago’s slim hopes of overhauling their opponents total and they were bowled out for 142 in 19.2 overs.

otago cannot now qualify for the knockout stages and are lying fifth in the six team competition.

they will wind up their group programme against northern districts at mount maunganui on february 9.

cox will then return to New Road to continue his preparations for the 2019 campaign.
