Worcestershire will be looking for a fighting effort from their remaining batsmen in a bid to stave off defeat on the final day of the LV = County Championship clash with Sussex at New Road.
The County faced a first innings deficit of 300 after Luke Wright scored a career best 226 not out for Sussex and reached 59-3 by the close.
Wright finished unbeaten from 274 balls with seven sixes and 28 fours in an innings spanning six and a quarter hours.
The County attack plugged away with Joe Leach and Charlie Morris ending with two wickets apiece and Jack Shantry picking up one – his 50th of the season in the LV = CC.
But the home side also failed to hold onto five chances – three of them offered by Wright on 118, 175 and 204.
Daryl Mitchell returned to lead the side in mid afternoon after his wife Danni gave birth to Ava Jane Mitchell earlier today.
Leach captained Worcestershire during the morning and early afternoon sessions.
Ava Jane Mitchell weighed seven pounds and the club wish to pass on their congratulations to Daryl and Danni.
Daryl took over the reins again of the team mid-way during the afternoon session.
The visitors resumed on 251-3 from 66 overs and Wright and Ben Brown shared in a record stand for Sussex in matches against Worcestershire for any wicket.
It was worth 282 in 64 overs, surpassing the previous best of 226 by George Cox and Gordon Potter at New Road in 1954.
Morris broke the stand when Brown on 103 was caught at deep backward square by Saeed Ajmal.
Sussex skipper Chris Nash returned to the crease on Brown's dismissal after suffering mild concussion when top edging a Morris delivery onto his helmet yesterday and having to retire hurt.
He advanced his score to 90 and put on 104 in 17 overs with Wright before being trapped lbw by Leach.
Nash faced 113 balls and hit two sixes and 10 fours and the declaration came shortly after his dismissal.
Worcestershire launched their second innings and Steve Magoffin trapped Brett D'Oliveira lbw for nought.
Mitchell and Tom Fell added 39 for the second wicket and the fading light led to Sussex turning to spin.
Luke Wells dismissed Mitchell (10) who fell to a fine catch by Chris Jordan at slip.
Jordan also held onto a chance offered by Fell (26) off Ashar Zaidi.
