County Overseas Star Ashwin Makes Vital Breakthrough For India

Worcestershire 2017 and 2018 overseas signing, Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, produced another superb delivery to dismiss England opener Alastair Cook for the second time in the first Specsavers Test at Edgbaston.

Ashwin had accounted for England’s record run-scorer for 13 in the first innings after he had prodded forward to an excellent ball that pitched in line and hit off stump.

Then this evening the 31-year-old was entrusted with the new ball – and struck in the final over of the day.

This time Ashwin found his way past Cook’s defence before he had scored with a similar type of delivery that hit the top of off stump.

The 31-year-old was understandably delighted at claiming such a prized scalp as he followed up his 4-62 in the first innings with a key breakthrough.

Ashwin helped Worcestershire to promotion from Division Two of the Specsavers County Championship last summer with 20 wickets in four games.

He is returning for the final two Championship matches of 2018 after India have completed their tour of England.

England closed day two on 9-1 after earlier dismissing India for 274 to earn a first innings lead of 13 despite Virat Kohli’s 149.
