County Under-17S Frustrated By Weather Against Somerset

Worestershire Under-17s had to be content with another weather-hit draw after rain washed out the final day of their ECB County Championship clash with Somerset at Stourbridge.

Somerset had been due to resume on 218-5 in reply to Worcestershire’s first innings total of 295 but a heavy downpour left the ground saturated and the umpires with no option than to abandon the game.

Worcestershire had also endured a last day wash-out of last week’s Championship match with Hampshire at Basingstoke when in a strong position to push for victory.

It means that all four of their Championship games in 2017 ended with honours even.

But Worcestershire CCC Academy coach Elliot Wilson felt there were passages of play which augur well for the future.

He said: “We’ve played a couple of periods of really impressive cricket.

“I thought two weeks ago at Stourport when we were asked to follow on against Devon, the way we batted then was as close as to what is expected and the pressures that are going to be on players in second team cricket.

“Also at Basingstoke, when we bowled Hampshire out for 260 and then Callum Lea got 200 and Mahaaz Ahmed a century, just the way we played there, we were very impressive on that second day.

“Those two periods of played showed a few cricketers who have got some real steel and mettle for potentially cricket at a higher level.”
