Daryl Mitchell: Day One Reaction – Essex V Worcestershire

Daryl Mitchell: Day One Reaction – Essex V Worcestershire

Worcestershire acting skipper Daryl Mitchell gave his reaction after day one of the Specsavers County Championship match with Essex at Chelmsford.

The visitors were bowled out for 94 on the stroke of lunch after electing to bat and Essex reached 252-5 in reply.

Mitchell told BBC Hereford-Worcester: “I spoke to the coaches and the senior players and it was pretty unanimous (to bat first).

“We thought there was every chance it was going to spin. That’s why we decided to bat. Obviously, in hindsight, it was probably not the wisest decision I’ve ever made.

“It is pretty dry out there. The sun was due to come out about between 11 and 11.30. It came out about quarter past but by then we were five down.

“In hindsight, a mistake (to bat first) but it was made with logic behind it and with good intentions.

“September, 10.30am starts, it is always going to be a tough hour, simple as that. I thought we were equipped to get through that hour and to try and blunt the new ball as best as we could.

“We thought the best time to bat in this game was going to be sessions two and three on day one and it did play pretty well during the afternoon.

“Vijay Singh was impressive and timed the ball from ball one almost. He has played at the highest level and done very well so it was not a surprise to see him play like that.

“How does the game stand? As days go, they don’t get much worse than that but we’ve just got to show some fight, try and get them out as quickly as we can and bat as well as we can in the second innings.

“We are obviously way behind in the game at the moment. We’ve got to try and fight our way out of it.”
