Day One Reaction Hants V Worcs: Skipper Joe Leach

Worcestershire skipper Joe Leach, speaking at the end of day one of the Specsavers County Championship match with Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl, told BBC Hereford-Worcester: “On the whole probably a positive day. Some stuff we certainly need to improve on.

“We probably had two 45 minute sessions, one in the first session and then that last wicket partnership.

“I put down that catch (Gareth Berg) and it was just a little bit frustrating we couldn’t knock that over for 250 after doing so well to claw the game back from about 110-1 at one point at about six an over.

“It was looking a little bit dicey but I thought the lads worked really hard and, considering that’s our first proper bowl in a match situation for three weeks, it was very encouraging.

“I think it (the lack of pre-season action) showed a bit in that first session. There was probably a bit of eagerness from the two younger guys in Josh (Tongue) and Ed (Barnard).

“They got the ball in their hand and potentially wanted things to happen a little bit quicker than they needed to.

“We had a little bit of a chat after we got Jimmy Adams out and reassessed and I thought that second session was phenomenal.

“If we can back that up over the course of a season it will stand us in good stead.

“How pleased are you to get to 40-2? They are really tricky little periods of play and, considering they got the momentum a little with that last wicket partnership, then credit to Daryl (Mitchell) and I thought Tom (Fell) played really well.

“He just got a good ball which he is entitled to get in April.

“If you can get through that new ball, and it goes a little bit softer, then there is the chance to score runs.

“We hope Mitch and Tonguey can hang around for that first hour in the morning and we just have to cash in and, if someone gets in, they have got to score big.”
