First Anniversary Of Death Of Phil Hughes

First Anniversary Of Death Of Phil Hughes

Today marks the first anniversary of the death of former Worcestershire and Australian batsman Phil Hughes.

Hughes, who played for the County in 2012, passed away after being hit by a delivery at the Syney Cricket Ground.

Worcestershire players honoured their former team-mate last November by lining up their bats in The View reception at New Road.

Supporters also paid their respects and left flowers and messages in remembrance of Hughes and a book of condolence was opened.

Hughes was a popular figure with his team-mates and spectators during his season at New Road in addition to being a prolific run-scorer, particularly in white ball cricket.

He had been due to return to New Road for the 2013 campaign before being drafted into the Ashes squad that summer.

Skipper Daryl Mitchell said: "Hughesy was a great bloke and will never be forgotten by the lads in the dressing room.

"It's hard to believe a year has gone by already since his tragic death.

"He fitted in and mixed in so well as one of the lads. He was also a great player for us and very popular with the spectators."
