Five Wicket Gareth Relishes New Ball Role And Benefits Of Shorter Run-Up

Gareth Andrew admits he is relishing taking the new ball this season and reaping the rewards of a shorter run-up.

The Worcestershire pacemen returned career best figures of 5-40 on the second day of the LV = County Championship match with Glamorgan at the Swalec Stadium.

Andrew has been opening the bowling after the retirement of Alan Richardson and has taken 18 wickets in six innings.

He said: "It's been a really good start to the season for our bowling unit and I have enjoyed taking the new ball since Richo has moved on.

"It's been nice. You just get the best of the conditions with the new ball. If it is going to do anything, it's going to do it when it is newer.

"Hopefully you get a bit more movement.

"I've also changed my run-up just to get a bit more pace into the crease and it's a lot shorter as well.

"I don't want to waste the mileage early on and there's going to be a fair bit of mileage during the season.

"There is a little bit of trying to get through as much cricket in the season as possible.

"It has worked well for me and not really affected the way I have bowled."

Andrew was quick to pay tribute to the 109 made by skipper Daryl Mitchell which helped Worcestershire earn a first innings lead of 85 – extended to 105 without any loss by the close.

He said: "It was such a good innings to watch. He held us together, a one man innings. He has given us a score to bowl at which going in with a good lead now makes it look even better.

"I can't tell you how good that innings was."

Andrew hopes spinner Saeed Ajmal will be able to capitalise on the conditions during the secnd part of the game.

He said: "It has just done enough all game so far. The pitch is a bit two-paced, there has been a little bit of seam, a little bit of spin and Saeed spun it nicely.

"Going into the last innings, there is going to be more bounce and more spin for Saeed and hopefully enough for us seamers.

"We are in a strong position now to be positive and try and go a similar way to the last game."
