Halesowen Win Canterbury County Cup For First Time At New Road

Halesowen Win Canterbury County Cup For First Time At New Road

Halesowen won the Canterbury County Cup for the first time as they defeated Hagley by 39 runs in the final at New Road today.

The victors were indebted to an explosive innings from Wes Griffiths and fine bowling from Dylan Ross-Watt and Hassan Qaumi.

They became the third winners after Ombersley lifted the inaugral trophy in 2014 and Worcester City triumphed in the final 12 months ago.

Halesowen were put into bat and totalled 166-6 in their 20 overs.

Openers Qaumi and Kester Miseley put on 52 in eight overs but the fireworks came from Griffiths who hit 52 off 23 balls with four sixes and four fours.

He dominated a third wicket stand of 60 in six overs with Jujhar Johal who earlier in the week picked up seven wickets for Worcestershire Under-19s against Northamptonshire Under-19s at Desborough.

Amjad Ali was the most successful bowler for Hagley with 3-29 in his four overs and there was also two wickets for Rob Hancock.

Ross-Watt took the new ball and nipped out two early wickets and then returned at the end to be part of a collapse which saw the last five wickets go down for nine runs with the required rate climbing.

Qaumi collected two wickets in successive balls in the 18th over to finish with 3-24 and then the game ended with three wickets in three balls during a Ross-Watt over including a run-out.

Ali ended a successful all-round game by top-scoring with 29 but Hagley finished short of their target.
