Items Wanted To Mark 50Th Anniversary Of D’oliveira Affair

the d’oliveira foundation are to mark the 50th anniversary of the infamous ‘d’oliveira affair’ by staging an exhibition prior to their annual gala dinner at New Road on friday 14th september.

the foundation are appealing to people to search their attics, bottom drawers and garden sheds to locate and loan them items relating to the infamous events during the latter stages of 1968.

basil d’oliveira was at the centre piece of a turbulent period which rocked cricket and politics and had huge reprecussions for south africa.

the exhibition is part of the foundation’s celebrations for the 50th anniversary and will feature items from the lord’s museum, the worcestershire ccc heritage group and the d’oliveira family themselves.

the ‘d’oliveira affair’ was a political and sporting controversy relating to england’s 1968–69 tour of south africa and basil’s inclusion as a mixed race south african.

the tour was eventually called off and south africa were isolated from international cricket for 20 years until 1991 and the majority of international sports as opposition to apartheid intensified.
