Jack Haynes scored an undefeated century as Worcestershire CCC Academy achieved a four wicket victory over Ireland Under-17s in a 50 over match at Stourbridge Cricket Club today.
The 15-year-old, who last week was given a taste of Second Eleven cricket in the Championship match against Nottinghamshire, hit a superb 131 not out.
His 135 ball innings contained three sixes and 16 fours as the Academy chased down their 259 target with seven balls to spare.
Haynes was given excellent support by Nick Hammond in rescuing the Worcestershire innings from 38-3 when they joined forces.
They added 150 for the fourth wicket in 31 overs with Hammond making 73 from 86 deliveries with 11 boundaries.
The loss of three quick wickets meant there was still work to be done at 215-6 but Charlie Page-Morris stayed in with Haynes while he completed a memorable victory after 48.5 overs.
Earlier, Ireland had elected to bat after winning the toss and totalled 258 all out in exactly 50 overs.
Andrew Vincent and Sam Murphy added 62 for the second wicket and then skipper Jamie Grassi, who scored a half century, and Morgan Topping featured in a 68 run partnership for the fifth wicket.
For the Academy, Dan Lloyd returned the excellent figures of 10-1-30-1, Josh Haynes removed Grassi and finished with 1-43 from his 10 overs while Page-Morris (2-43) enjoyed a double success.
When the Academy started their reply, George Newton, George Balderson and William Wade all fell cheaply but then came the excellent Jack Haynes-Hammond partnership which turned the game in the home side's favour.
