Jack Shantry produced a brutal display of clean hitting in reaching his second Specs County Championship hundred and steering Worcestershire to maximum batting points against Gloucestershire at New Road.
The 28-year-old peppered the boundary with fours and sixes in a stunning display to complete a memorable recovery by the home side who were 34-5.
They were eventually bowled out for 439 with Shantry last man out for a run a ball 106 which contained six sixes and 11 fours.
Then the Worcestershire attack was rewarded for its perseverance with four wickets during the evening session as Gloucestershire moved onto 226-5 from 78 overs.
Graeme van Buuren completed his hundred in the final over of the day from Alexei Kervezee.
Shantry's second 50 had spanned just 14 deliveries and two overs from Craig Miles were despatched for 44 runs.
He was given sterling support by last man Charlie Morris who defended stubbornly while all 69 runs in the partnership were scored at the other end – including two for a no ball from Miles which was hit for six.
Shantry was eventually bowled by Liam Norwell for a career best 106 and left the ground to a standing ovation and the applause of his team-mates.
His previous hundred had been scored in the promotion-clinching victory over Surrey at New Road in September 2014.
Shantry's efforts followed on from another memorable innings by Tom Kohler-Cadmore who extended his overnight 153 not out to 169 before he was caught behind off Norwell.
His career best score spanned six hours and 281 balls and included 25 fours.
Shantry had one let-off on 39 when he sliced a Payne delivery towards third man and three Gloucestershire fielders coverged on the ball but left it to each other.
He went to his 50 with a six over mid wicket off Miles and then really cut loose as the bowler conceded 23 and 21 runs in successive overs.
None of the bowlers were spared in the onslaught in an incredible opening hour's cricket.
The ground erupted as Shantry went to three figures with a towering six off Miles over long on.
Shantry then shared the new ball when Gloucestershire began their reply and made an important breakthrough in his fourth over.
Opener Chris Dent (5) played back and was bowled by the 28-year-old with 16 on the board in the eighth over.
Gloucestershire resumed after lunch on 22-1 and the County attack continued to plug away in search of another breakthrough.
But the second wicket pair of Gareth Roderick and Graeme van Buuren provided stubborn resistance.
Van Burren on 33 edged Charlie Morris just short of second slip where skipper Daryl Mitchell needed treatment after fielding the delivery.
Roderick was first to his 50 off 115 balls with six fours and Van Buuren followed him to the milestone in the next over off 11 deliveries with six boundaries.
Worcestershire claimed two quickfire wickets in the post tea session.
First Van Buuren on 60 was leg before to Brett D'Oliveira to end a stand of 120 in 45 overs with Roderick.
Then Shantry returned to the attack and an inswinging full length delivery trapped former Worcestershire player Michael Klinger (8).
Hamish Marshall looked in good touch and raced to 34 but then leading wicket-taker Joe Leach brought about his downfall at 191-4.
The New Zealander clipped the County's vice-captain off his toes into the hands of Ross Whiteley at short mid wicket.
It became 208-5 when George Hankins attempted to pull a Barnard delivery and gloved a catch to keeper Cox.
