Joe Says He Will “reap Benefits” Of First Season As Captain

Joe Leach says he will reap the benefits from experiencing “both sides of the coin” in his first season as Worcestershire captain.

All-rounder Leach enjoyed the highs of leading the County to the Specsavers County Championship Division Two title and topping the Royal London One-Day North Group to seal a home semi-final.

But the County also tasted a disappointing T20 Blast campaign and won only three group games.

Leach said: “When you look back on the whole season, you can’t ask for anything better but if you pinpoint certain times, that six weeks was absolute hell in the T20 campaign.

“It was probably as low as I’ve been since I’ve been a cricketer here.

“But then the ups, it’s as high as I’ve ever been. You take the rough with the smooth.

“I think it was a good experience for me in my first season to have seen both sides of the coin.

“I will learn from it, gain experience from it, and look to improve on it as well.”

Leach has come to terms with different demands of being a captain.

He said: “I didn’t realise as well when I took on the job quite how all consuming it is for six months.

“It is all you think about, the good, the bad, what can you do differently, what can you do better, what can we do to improve.

“But it’s brilliant, one of the best jobs you could wish to have.

“You grow up dreaming of being a county cricketer, a county captain. It’s an unbelievable experience and one I am really enjoying.”
