Just Three Months To Go Until County Tackle Yorkshire At New Road!

Just Three Months To Go Until County Tackle Yorkshire At New Road!

It's January 12 and exactly three months from today until LV = County Championship Division One cricket returns to New Road.

April 12 is the date to have pencilled in your diary for the start of Worcestershire's clash with 2014 champions Yorkshire.

Skipper Daryl Mitchell's newly promoted side will pit their wits against the Tykes in a repeat of our opening match of the 2011 season – the year after going up from Division Two.

It is a mouth-watering opener to Worcestershire's 150th Anniversary Year.

Yorkshire overcame the absence of several players to England duty to lift the title while Worcestershire defied pre-season bookmakers odds of 33-1 to be promoted.

Some of those players are again likely to be absent – including our own Moeen Ali – given that the fixture overlaps with England's tour of the West Indies during April.

But it will offer home fans the opportunity to see new signing, batsman Alex Gidman from Gloucestershire, make his debut for Worcestershire.

Gidman scored a superb century against Worcestershire on his last appearance at New Road in August.

Worcestershire Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes said: "It is exciting to play against the big sides again. That is the underlying feeling.

"That will be a great fixture against Yorkshire. It will be interesting to see whether they are stretched a little bit for that game because there is going to be international cricket going on.

"At the moment Yorkshire, quite rightly, have got a lot of players involved in the England set-up so it will be interesting to see if they are down a few players.

"But whoever plays against us, they are going to be full of confidence after last season and they are always a strong side."

Worcestershire were beaten by nine wickets by the Tykes four years ago but only after being in strong contention for a large slice of the game.

Rhodes said: "That game here three years ago may have been a victory opportunity that slipped through our hands. The best sides don't let it slip through their grasp.

"That is the thing about four-day cricket is you have to keep pounding away and recognise opportunities.

"It is something we did well last year and something we'd like to build on going forward for next season."
