Leach In Excellent Form With Five Wicket Haul For North Canberra

Joe Leach was in excellent form with the ball for North Canberra Gungahlin but his side just failed to force outright victory on the second day of the Australian Capital Territory first grade clash with Ginninderra.

The Worcestershire all-rounder had returned 2-28 on the opening day the previous weekend when Ginninderra were bowled out for 212 in 84.5 overs.

Leach contributed 19 with the bat before edging to second slip after driving off the back foot as North Canberra totalled 270-9 declared – a lead of 58.

He then returned the excellent figures of 5-31 from 14 overs as Ginninderra were dismissed for 108 in their second innings.

But there was no time left in the game for North Canberra to attempt to knock off their modest target.

Richard Oliver's side, Geelong City, were also unable to seal an outright win on the second day of their Geelong Cricket Assciation Division One clash with Saturday we went to Bell Post Hill.

Geelong had reduced Bell Post to 25-6 on the opening day after Worcestershire opener Oliver had top-scored with 82 out of his side's 196.

They bowled them out for 69 to earn a first innings lead of 127.

Bell Post were asked to bat again by Geelong skipper Oliver but provided much stiffer opposition second time around and closed on 202-5.

Oliver said: "It was no surprise as the pitch was much harder to bowl on than the previous week, but we could have been better all day if we're being harsh on ourselves.

"It was understandably a sombre day for everybody following the tragic news of the week (the death of Phil Hughes) and the standard of cricket reflected that I felt. It really was quite surreal.

"But it was pleasing to get the points in the bag."
