LEACH LOOKING FOR MORE OF THE SAME FROM COUNTY AT CARDIFF

Joe Leach is looking for Worcestershire to carry on where they left off in the Specsavers County Championship meeting with current leaders Glamorgan at Cardiff beginning tomorrow.

Club captain Leach was delighted with the overall performance of the team in the drawn game with Sussex at Kidderminster.

Now after a week’s break from action the County will be looking to return to winning ways as they approach a trio of fixtures against Glamorgan, Derbyshire and Durham before the Vitality Blast gets underway.

Leach said: “There’s no getting away from it, we’ve had a few tough weeks so I was really impressed by the way the guys responded against Sussex.

“I thought that for the large chunk of the game we dominated it and played really good cricket.

“Unfortunately we didn’t quite kill it off but showed plenty of signs of encouragement moving forward.”

The County came close to achieving a winning position despite injuries to Wayne Parnell and Leach himself when Sussex were on the ropes at 34-4 in their second innings mid-way through the third day.

Leach said: “It was very unfortunate and disappointing the timing of the injuries.

“That’s cricket and I thought the way the guys responded to it through the rest of that day was exceptional.

“Even the first ball after lunch on the final day, we were still favourites to win the game so that speaks a lot for the character of the group and also the position we got ourselves into as well.

“These things happen. I thought we rode with the punches relatively well and if we had just finished off that last wicket partnership a bit more tidily then who knows what might have happened.

“We certainly got the better of the draw and we move onto Glamorgan. We’ve got three or four more games coming now in quick succession and we will just keep trying to play the kind of cricket we played versus Sussex.

“Hopefully that gets us a couple of wins and we move up the table.

“The table in June is largely irrelevant. It would obviously be nice to have had a couple more wins and be sat at the top of it. But the table only really matters in September.“
