Leatherdale Delight As Possee Of Academy Products Sign On Dotted Line

Worcestershire chief executive David Leatherdale has revealed his delight at so many products of the club's Academy signing fresh deals with the club during the past three months.

Eleven members of the county's squad have put pen to paper on new contracts since the beginning of August – with 10 of them being Academy products.

Skipper Daryl Mitchell (four years) and paceman Jack Shantry (three years) were the latest players to sign on until the end of 2018 and 2017 respectively.

Leatherdale said: "It is very pleasing. In the last couple of years, younger guys have been coming through and this year they've shown at top level what they can do.

"The likes of Tom Fell, Joe Leach, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, all sorts of guys, have done a pretty good job and hopefully will only get better over the next two or three years.

"To have that nucleus of players that Bumpy (Director of Cricket Steve Rhodes) and the club want that are coming through the Academy, dove-tailed with some of the senior guys, hopefully means it looks good from the future.

"Opportunity is one of the big things. Here you have that opportunity to play and if you take it, then you will get rewarded.

"There are a number of those who have signed who have come through like that in the last two or three years and three or four have matured at a very similar time and shown they can do it at all levels.

"They've done well and hopefully there are others further down the chain that will be in the same boat in two or three years time."

Academy products Mitchell, Fell, Kohler-Cadmore, Ben Cox, Leach, Shantry, Brett D'Oliveira, Chris Russell Joe Clarke and Ed Barnard have all signed new contracts since August 1 in addition to Shaaiq Choudhry.
