Mason: County Will Reap Benefits Of Extra Depth To Seam Attack

Bowling coach Matt Mason says Worcestershire's posse of seam bowlers will reap the benefits of the extra depth provided by the signing of Matt Henry and Kyle Abbott as overseas players this summer.

Joe Leach, Jack Shantry and Charlie Morris bore the brunt of the workload admirably during 2015 after the since departed Gareth Andrew was side-lined through injury and between them picked up 160 County Championship wickets.

But Mason believes the arrival of Henry – April to June – and Abbott – July to September – will allow the County to "manage our bowling group a bit differently" and keep them fresh for the entire campaign.

Mason, who is also Assistant Coach at New Road, said: "It's nice to have some bowling depth now, that extra seamer (with Henry and Abbott).

"It allows us to perhaps manage our bowling group a little bit differently so we can have them effective the whole season.

"The three lads (Leach, Shantry, Morris) bowled a lot of overs in 2015 – out of necessity really.

"I guess also because Saeed Ajmal wasn't as effective as he might have been, the lads had to bowl more overs than they would have done.

"We are going to have four front-line seamers, we got young Josh Tongue coming through, Chris Russell as well, plus your overseas gives us some flexibility.

"We can hopefully rotate as much as we need to and hopefully keep the guys fresh and at the business end of the season firing for us."
