Mason Hails “incredible Performance” From Promotion Hero Shantry

Worcestershire assistant coach Matt Mason has hailed the heroics of Jack Shantry and says he "epitomises everything I like in a bowler and a competitor."

Shantry made cricket history in helping the county defeat Surrey at New Road to seal promotion to Division One of the LV = County Championship.

It was the first time a player batting a number nine or lower has scored a century and taken 10 wickets in the same first class match.

Mason, who is also the county's bowling coach, said after the 27 run success: "I'm a little bit speechless because I can't quite believe what I've just witnessed.

"Jack Shantry, I'm absolutely speechless about that performance, because it was one of the most incredible performances from an individual.

"To put it bluntly, he has single-handedly kept us in that game of cricket and that is something very special that none of us will ever forget.

"I think it is just reward for the effort these lads have put in the whole year.

"As bowling coach, I couldn't be prouder of every single one of them. They have been awesome all year.

"Jack epitomises everything I like in a bowler and a competitor. He has a never say die attitude.

"There was no way you were getting the ball out of his hands today. He would have been thinking all along he can win that game and now we can all celebrate because of his efforts."

Worcestershire are guaranteed to finish in the top two ahead of their final match of the season against Essex at Chelmsford starting on September 23.

But Mason said: "There is still plenty to play for down there because the guys would like to go up as champions.

"That would give them huge confidence. We will be going down there, playing with a little bit of freedom I've no doubt, which might work in our favour.

"But we'd like to turn Essex over down there, for sure."
