Matt Mason admitted that the Worcestershire bowling unit experienced a rare off day as centuries from Jonny Bairstow and Andrew Gale helped Yorkshire reach 357-5 on day one of the LV = County Championship match at Scarborough.
Joe Leach, Jack Shantry and Charlie Morris have formed a formidable pace duo in the county's battle to stay in the top flight.
Leach picked up three early wickets but Mason felt the Worcestershire attack fell below the standards which has seen them collect maximum bowling points from the opening 10 LV = CC matches.
Bowling coach and assistant coach Mason told BBC Hereford-Worcester's Dave Bradley: "We saw class batting from Bairstow and Gale. Credit to them, they both played exceptionally well.
"We gave ourselves a chance, taking those three wickets in the first session but for the first time this year, as a bowling unit we didn't quite execute our plans we normally do so well.
"We got hit both sides of the wicket and square and it's not what we talked about in our plans. We will talk about it in the morning and try and put it right tomorrow.
"As far as the bowling day goes, it is probably one of our poorer of the season.
"We tried our best to use the overhead conditions early on. It looks a decent wicket but if you put the ball in the right area often enough, there is something in it for the bowlers.
"We saw a couple of nicks even towards the end of the day.
"We just have to put our hands up and say we didn't bowl as well as we could but hopefully tomorrow morning we can make amends and hit that first hour well.
"We do keep fighting even if things aren't going so well and if we can knock them over early tomorrow morning, we will give ourselves a chance to get back into the game."
Mason is looking for the Worcestershire batsman to bat for long periods when it is their turn to occupy the crease.
He said: "It's a good batting surface and a fast scoring ground so as long as our batsmen apply themselves and look to bat a long period of time, there's no reason why we can't post a big first innings score as well.
"When our time comes, we are going to have to bat very well like those two guys did." Mason believes Bairstow could be close to an England recall.
He said: "I thought he played terrifically well and I'd think he'd have to be getting close to an England call-up on the back of that especially after the result at Lord's today.
"He has been getting runs all season and is a fantastic player."
