Daryl Mitchell’s seven first class centuries this summer – all in the Specsavers County Championship – was the highest number in a season by a Worcestershire batsman for 21 years.
The evergreen opener was the first County player to achieve that feat since Tom Moody during the 1996 campaign and was all the more remarkable for being clocked up in only 14 games.
Mitchell is moving into exalted company with the list of Worcestershire’s most number of tons in a season dominated by Glenn Turner and Graeme Hick.
New Zealand legend Turner clocked up 10 hundreds for Worcestershire in 1970, nine in 1981, eight in 1979 and seven in both 1972 and 1980.
He amassed 22,298 first class runs for Worcestershire with 72 centuries between 1967 and 1982 as he converted himself from a solid opener into one of the most destructive batsman ever seen at New Road.
Worcestershire run machine Hick registered 10 hundreds in 1988 in addition to eight in 1987 and 1990 before getting the call from England.
His County career spanned 25 years from 1984 and he hung up his spikes as Worcestershire’s highest century-maker – 106 – and second highest run scorer – 31, 149.
It went unnoticed that Mitchell moved past 11,000 first class runs for the County during the latter part of his prolific season.
His overall first class tally now stands at 11,550 at an average of 40.66 – including 339 runs for Mountaineers in Zimbabwe and 63 for the MCC versus Yorkshire in Abu Dhabi in 2015.
