Moeen Ali made useful contributions with ball and bat but England were well beaten by Australia in the Tri-Series final in Perth today.
The Worcestershire all-rounder returned 1-39 from his 10 overs and made 26 off 30 balls – his side's second top score – in his normal opening role.
But Australia, who had been put in, recovered from a poor start to post an imposing 278-8 in their 50 overs which England never threatened to challenge as they were bowled out for 166 in 39.1 overs.
Only Ravi Bopara, with 33 when the game was already lost, scored more than Moeen in the England innings.
Moeen came into the attack in the 18th over and in his first over had former New Road T20 player Steve Smith stumped at the second attempt by Jos Buttler for 40.
That made Australia 60-4 and Moeen bowled nine tidy overs on the trot as Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh set about rebuilding the innings.
As now seems the norm, Moeen was taken out of the action with one over remaining of his spell and came back to complete it in the 42nd over.
Maxwell (95) and Marsh (60) added 141 in 23 overs and then James Faulkner plundered an unbeaten 24 ball half century.
Moeen looked in good touch and picked up three boundaries off Mitchell Starc and two off Mitchell Johnson.
But he was third out with the total on 40, fending a short, climbing delivery from Johnson to Aaron Finch at wide slip and England lost wickets at regular intervals.
It was their final One-Day International before they meet Australia again in the World Cup opener in Melbourne on February 14.
