Moeen Claims Vital Wicket Of Shakib As England End Day Three On Top

Moeen Ali claimed the vital wicket of Shakib Al Hasan as England ended on top after day three of the first Test with Bangladesh in Chittagong.

The Worcestershire all-rounder made his vital breakthrough with the second ball of the day after the home nation had resumed on 221-5 in reply to England's 293.

Former New Road team-mate Shakib on 31 gave Moeen the charge and was stumped by Jonny Bairstow without addition to his overnight score.

It was Moeen's third wicket of the innings and sparked a collapse which saw the last five wickets tumble for 27 runs this morning, three of them to Ben Stokes who finished with 4-26 from 14 overs.

Moeen ended with figures of 3-75 from 22 overs.

England again ran into early trouble in their second innings and Moeen, who scored 68 in the first innings, again found himself coming to the wicket at a tricky time at 28-3.

This time he made a restrained 14 off 50 balls without a boundary before attempting to sweep Shakib and he was caught behind down the leg side via an under edge which ballooned up via his gloves.

England were then 62-5 – leading by just 107 – but Stokes and Bairstow figured in a century partnership to lead a revival.

Stoke made 85 and Bairstow 47 as England closed on 228-8 – an overall advantage of 273 runs on a pitch offering encouragement to the spinners.
