Moeen Ali picked up three wickets in the space of 14 deliveries on day two of the second Test with India in Visakhapatnam – but England are facing an uphill battle.
The Worcestershire all-rounder's victims included Indian skipper Virat Kohli for 167 as England dismissed the home side for 455 in 129.4 overs.
It took the Test wicket tally of Moeen – man of the match in the drawn first Test in Rajkot – to 95.
But then England were reduced to 103-5 from 49 overs by the close – with Moeen dismissed for a single.
Moeen had conceded 50 runs in 11 overs on the opening day after India had elected to bat but was quickly amongst the wickets when play resumed.
He came close to a breakthrough in his second over of the day when Ravichandran Ashwin was dropped at slip by Ben Stokes.
But the same combination accounted for Kohli to the very next delivery after he went to drive Moeen with Stokes holding onto a sharp chance.
Kohli struck 18 fours in his 267 ball knock.
Moeen then picked up two wickets in the space of three balls to leave India on 363-7.
First Wriddhiman Saha (3) was undone by a delivery which turned a long way from outside the off stump and was trapped lbw on the back foot deep in his crease.
Then Ravindra Jadeja (0) went in the same manner and, although replays showed the ball would have missed leg stump, India did not review the decision.
Moeen finished with 3-90 from 24 overs and today had figures of 13-1-40-3. James Anderson (3-62) was the other chief wicket-taker.
The 29-year-old Moeen had scored a century in the first Test but today made only a single before he was lbw to off spinner Jayant Yadav for one.
He was fifth out at 80 and much will depend on Stokes and Jonny Bairstow if England are to have any chance of avoiding the follow on in the bowler-friendly conditions.
