Moeen Ali picked up his first two wickets of the Ashes tour as England maintained their grip on the final warm-up match against a Cricket Australia X1 in Townsville.

The Worcestershire all-rounder dismissed Cricket Australia openers Jake Carder and Ryan Gibson in his second spell after the home side started their second innings 265 runs in arrears.

Moeen had bowled 16 overs for 39 runs in the first innings – his first bowl of the tour after a side strain – and he conceded 25 runs in his first five overs today.

But he enjoyed more success after swapping ends and his second spell brought figures of 6-4-9-2.

The 30-year-old ended an opening stand of 80 when Carder (34) edged a delivery that turned sharply and was caught by skipper Joe Root.

Moeen struck again when Gibson (49) went for a sweep and was bowled.

He ended the day with figures of 11-5-34-2 as Cricket Australia closed on 121-3.

Earlier, Moeen had missed out with the bat, making five batting at number seven – his first knock after recovering from his injury – before he was bowled by off spinner Matthew Short.

But a century from Dawid Malan enabled England to reach 515 all out after they had resumed on 337-3.
