Moeen Ali was dismissed by the final ball before lunch on the fifth day of the second Investec Test against India who went onto win by 95 runs at Lord's.
The Worcestershire all-rounder had dug in and featured in a splendid century partnership with Joe Root for the fifth wicket to revive England's victory hopes.
Moeen showed the same sort of defiance that had brought him a century against Sri Lanka at Headingley.
He lofted spinner Ravindra Jadeja for two to bring up the 100 stand with Root off 262 balls.
But after making 39 Moeen ducked under a short ball from Indian paceman Ishant Sharma only for the ball to hit his bat and pop up to short leg.
It left England on 173-5 at lunch – still 146 short of their 319 victory target with two sessions remaining.
England quickly subsided during the afternoon session and were bowled out for 223.
But Moeen has made a sizeable contribution with bat and ball in this current Test.
He returned figures of 1-38 from 14 overs in India's first innings and then scored 32 and shared in a crucial fifth wicket partnership of 98 with centurion Gary Ballance.
Then in India's second innings he picked up two more wickets in finishing with 2-28 from 11 overs.
His overall match figures were 3-66 from 25 overs and an economy rate of 2.64 runs per over.
