Moeen Ali hit a valuable half century to help England avoid the possibility of being asked to follow-on on day three of the fourth Test with South Africa in Centurion.
The Worcestershire all-rounder came to the wicket directly after lunch with England struggling at 211-6 in reply to the Proteas first innings total of 475 all out.
Moeen shared in partnerships of 41 with Ben Stokes (33) and 43 with Chris Woakes (26) to take England past the 276 needed to make South Africa bat again.
The 28-year-old then eked out 47 more runs from the last two wickets with Stuart Broad and James Anderson.
He was finally last out for 61, caught at extra cover off Morne Morkel, after making 61 off 101 balls with 11 boundaries.
It meant that 131 runs came from the last four wickets after Moeen went to the crease.
Moeen had also showed his value when batting at number eight in last summer's Ashes series when only Alastair Cook and Joe Root scored more runs for England.
His efforts today steered England to an all-out total of 342 – 133 behind on first innings.
South Africa reached 42-1 in their second innings before bad light halted play.
Moeen had just come into the attack when the players went off, looking to add to his 10 wickets in the series.
