Moeen Hits Century And Completes 1,000 Test Runs In 2016

Moeen Ali scored his second century of the series and completed 1,000 Test runs in 2016 as England fought back on day one of the fifth Test against India in Chennai.

The Worcestershire all-rounder overcame to a testing start to his innings – including being dropped on nought – to reach three figures off 203 balls out of 263-4.

It was his fourth Test hundred in this calendar year and a timely one after coming to the wicket with England 21-2.

He shared in stands of 146 with Joe Root (88) and 86 with Jonny Bairstow (49) as England closed on 284-4.

Moeen will resume tomorrow on 120 not out after striking 12 fours in his 222 ball knock.

He completed 1,000 runs for the year with a two off Ishant Sharma in his 17th Test during that period at an average of 47.67.

The 29-year-old had a let-off before he had scored with Lokesh Rahul failing to hold onto a head high chance at mid wicket off Ravindra Jadeja.

Moeen struck his first boundary from his 49th delivery – a sweep against Ravichandran Ashwin.

He survived a review for lbw by India on 20 from the bowling of Jadeja but gradually looked more assured.

Moeen went to his half century off 111 balls with five boundaries.

There were very few nerves in the 90s for Moeen as he came down the pitch to hit Amit Mishra for four to take him to 99.

Then a single on the off side from the next delivery took him to three figures.
